About  Me

I was born and raised in Smoky Lake and moved to the beautiful city of St. Albert in 2013, where I’ve firmly established my roots. My mother and my daughter, along with her family, also live here. Together, we actively participate in the many things this incredible community has to offer.

My career journey has been diverse. I initially worked in real estate before transitioning to roles as a medical receptionist and later as a dental assistant. Through these experiences, in 1984, I discovered my true passion. I decided to return to school to pursue my dream of becoming a teacher.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working across all grade levels, from elementary to high school. I've spent the last decade teaching students in grades 10-12. As I prepare to retire this year, I’m reflecting on the meaningful roles I’ve embraced throughout my career.

My contributions extend beyond the classroom. I have been actively involved in curriculum development, served as an ATA representative at multiple schools, and organized various school events such as graduations, student business presentations, and national and international student travel opportunities.

My experiences have provided me with a deep understanding of educational policies, student needs, and a strong network within the educational community.

Looking ahead, I am excited to bring a fresh perspective, integrity, and an innovative, solution-focused approach to addressing the challenges within our education system.

Why  I'm  Running

Supporting youth and helping pave the way for their success has always been my greatest passion. As a mother and grandmother, I feel a profound responsibility to be actively involved in my family's educational journey, striving to make learning a meaningful and empowering experience for them.

This commitment extends to advocating for the voices of all parents, recognizing the vital role they play in shaping their children’s education.

I am deeply dedicated to ensuring that education remains a cornerstone of our children’s lives—one that inspires, nurtures, and supports their growth every step of the way.

The testimonial below is one of the key reasons I am running for school board trustee. As highlighted by this former student, I am committed to fostering positive outcomes for all students, ensuring their success both now and in the future.

Student  Testimonial

“I am delighted to endorse Suzanne Sparling for Trustee within the St. Albert Public School District. As a former student of hers, I can attest to her unwavering dedication to both her students and the broader community.

Suzanne was my grade nine social studies teacher, and I credit her significantly for helping me come out of my shell and achieve academic success. At that time, I was a very shy student who struggled academically, but Suzanne saw potential in me. When Suzanne sees potential in her students, she is relentless in helping them realize it.

I had an interest in current events and politics, and Suzanne shared this passion. She made a concerted effort to connect with me and involve me in various initiatives and programs that allowed students like myself to shine. Some of the initiatives Suzanne championed included bringing the Elections Canada Student Vote to our school, the Mary Butterworth Business Project Competition, and the Forum for Young Canadians.

Through the Elections Canada Student Vote, Suzanne introduced students to the democratic process with a mock election that coincided with the federal election.

For the Forum for Young Canadians, Suzanne encouraged me to apply to be part of a group of teens who spent a week on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. During this week, I had the incredible opportunity to meet Members of Parliament, Cabinet Ministers, senior civil servants, and engage in political debates in the House of Commons. Suzanne also led the Mary Butterworth Business Project Competition, where grade nine students developed business ideas, created launch plans, and presented them to judges from the local business community.

While these initiatives highlight Suzanne’s boldness and creativity, I cannot overstate her caring nature. As a nervous and shy student, I struggled to find an outlet to shine, and the initiatives she introduced truly helped build my confidence. Suzanne also made a determined effort to check on my progress in subjects she didn’t teach. When she discovered I was struggling, she sat me down and mapped out a strategy to improve my studies, working with other teachers and helping me study after class.

I am thrilled to support Suzanne’s campaign to become a trustee. She has dedicated her life to supporting students and thinking outside the box to get them involved. Without her dedication, I wouldn’t be where I am today, and I am sure many others would say the same. Please vote for Suzanne Sparling and give her the opportunity to make a positive impact on students throughout the district!”

Logan is a former student of mine. He currently works as a Policy Advisor within Ontario’s Ministry of Tourism. Previously he has held roles within the Cabinet Office of Premier Doug Ford and the Rideau Hall Foundation.

I firmly believe that community involvement is at the core of a School Board Trustee’s role. I am dedicated to building and maintaining strong relationships with parents, students, school staff, and fellow Trustees.

Through open engagement with all members of the school community, we can work collaboratively to achieve outcomes that benefit every student.

Listening to the voices of parents and students is essential to creating an environment where all students can excel academically while also learning to embrace and contribute to their communities.

By fostering collaboration, we can help shape well-rounded, community-oriented individuals who thrive both within the classroom and beyond.

My  Vision

Promote Transparency and Accountability - Ensuring Parents are Fully Informed

I am committed to fostering a culture of openness and trust, ensuring that decisions are made with full transparency and that accountability is held at every level.

Reinforce Educational Excellence, Skills, and Global Competitiveness by Focusing on the Fundamentals

By prioritizing the core principles of education, we will strengthen our students' foundational skills, preparing them to be competitive in the global marketplace. Excellence in the basics is the key to their success on the world stage.

Cultivate Joint Partnerships That Empower Students, Encourage Family and Community Engagement, and Foster Academic and Social Growth

School, family and community partnerships enhance education by providing resources, real-world learning, and enrichment programs. Family involvement and community engagement fosters student success and a positive school culture. Local businesses and organizations can offer their expertise and resources to support the school curriculum. Collaborative efforts teach social responsibility and essential skills. Together, schools, families and communities advocate for student growth and success.
